Friends,
As many of you know, two significant education bills passed last night. One opens the door to a voucher program in Texas. The other, a school funding bill, provides only a modest increase, leaving our public schools still well behind where they stood in 2019, especially when you consider the rising costs of everything from supplies to staffing.
It’s natural to feel frustrated or even uncertain about what this means for the future. The truth is, we don’t know yet what this will look like in the months and years ahead. But here’s what we do know: PTA has always been a source of light in uncertain times.
During the pandemic, we reminded ourselves that when a door shuts, PTA opens a window. That spirit still holds true today.
Now is the time to lean into what PTA does best -building trust, bringing people together, and making our public schools feel like home for every family. This moment calls for PTA leaders who lead with empathy, grow strong connections, and prioritize meaningful family engagement.
While these legislative outcomes are not what we hoped for, they’re not the end of our story. Many other bills are being considered that could truly help our children and create safer, healthier environments for them to grow and learn. Texas PTA will continue advocating for beneficial legislation while speaking up against proposals that don’t serve the best interests of all children.
Furthermore, in light of the several school violence incidents that have occurred recently, I want to assure you that Texas PTA remains committed to supporting these affected communities in any way we can. The safety and well-being of all students remain our highest priority.
Our theme this year has been a tribute to Texas PTA’s 115-year legacy -rest assured, you have contributed to that in remarkable ways. I think Ella and Willa would be proud, and I am truly privileged to serve beside you.
The theme for the coming year will be Make New Connections for a Bright Tomorrow, and it could not be more fitting. When we focus on relationships, listen, and lead with kindness, we create lasting change for this school year and for generations to come.
You are the heart of that future. And it is my honor to build it with you.
With gratitude,
Jennifer Easley
President, Texas PTA
